Nevertheless: The game-play includes all sorts of parallels with the newest parts of the series. The player of Grand Theft Auto 2 also accomplishes several illegal jobs that need to be executed less or more violently, depending on the different scenarios. Aside from the outmoded graphics, Grand Theft Auto 2 still is an absolute cult game. The echo of the hard hitting action and the black humor of Grand Theft Auto 2 does still resonate in the latest game of the series Grand Theft Auto 5. Yes, Grand Theft Auto 2 is an oldie—but still a goodie! You could have played pretty much every computer game in the world, but there is one single adventure you should not have missed: Grand Theft Auto 2! This action game is much more than the violent epic the media as always portrayed it to be. The game stages a delicious and cynical interpretation of life in an American metropolis. And there is—oh yes, for sure, there is—violence. For example: Grand Theft Auto 2 offers you the opportunity to shoot and drive over innocent pedestrians and spectators. Nevertheless, the story mode contains many funny allusions to groupings and milieus of the American society. The fine sense of humor of this game interweaves brute force with irony and sarcasm.

Grand Theft Auto 2 is all about winning the favor of various competing criminal gangs. How? By doing the dirty work for them. Clearly: You have to kill off members of warring gangs, steal expensive cars, kidnap people, blow up buildings and harass many pedestrians. All these activities are awarded by several rival gangs in the city. Your reputation with the Mafiosi takes an impact on the quantity and quality of the jobs you get to perform. Thus it is advisable not to work for each gangster in the whole city! Logically, your respect in other gangs decreases anyway if you perform mafia jobs of competing gangs. There are seven gangs in total—but only three of them appear per level. Just keep one thing in mind: Loyalty does not matter much in Grand Theft Auto 2. The most influential Mafia in Grand Theft Auto 2 is the Zaibatsu Corporation. It is involved in any crooked business throughout the entire city and it has its sub-bosses in every district. The Loonies, however, consist of a bunch of lunatics who have occupied the madhouse of the city. They are kind of a terrorist organization—with a fondness for explosions. Their jobs are bizarre—but somehow funny—and usually they have something to do with explosives. The Yakuza represent an interpretation of the eponymous Japanese mafia. They have the latest technology on the market and equip you with the most advanced weapons and cars. The SRS Scientists are, however, as crazy as the Loonies. These wacky scientists abduct humans to run their wicked experiments on them. The Rednecks, nevertheless, are also great fanatics, who have built up their criminal temple in a fleet of trucks. By contrast, the members of the Russian mafia appear almost to be normal people. The Russians want only one thing: To steal pretty high-tech weapons and cars and then export them to Russia... phew… what conflicts of interest! And you're stuck right in the middle! How nice that there is a game like Grand Theft Auto 2, in which you can choose for whom you perform jobs, and above all, the way you finish them. You have a free choice for every weapon and every car. But the main thing is: You have to party very hard!
